MIKE JACKSON

I graduated from Timberline High School in 1979. All twelve of my years in school were on the
hilltop, in District 171.
During my High School years I participated in student government and sports. We had a large
class of 70 graduates and I was able to graduate as Salutatorion of our class.
After High School I went to LCSC and completed the Welding course. From there I took my
first job at Maki Manufacturing where I worked mostly on logging equipment, gaining
experience in perfecting my welding and fabricating skills. I worked eight years for Maki and
look back on it as an important part of my development in fine tuning my skills that led me to
my next position with Medley Cedar.
I took that job, working closely with Mark Medley as we ran, built, and enjoyed making cedar
products at the mill site just north of Weippe. We manufactured split rail fence and shake roof
products as well as operated a similar mill at Santa, Idaho. Later we built a mill in McBride,
British Columbia, Canada. My time with Medley consumed another eight years of my working
career.
After the Medley experience, I took a job at Empire Lumber Company in Weippe. There I
maintained and built the sawmill machinery and generally kept the mill in good operating
condition wherever my skills were needed. Then, the unexpected happened in 2008, and the
mill burned and was a total loss. It was, at this time, that I was asked to take on one of the
biggest projects of my life.....to rebuild a new large log mill in its place. And that is the mill that
is operating very successfully to this day.
During the Medley and Empire lumber days I also farmed with my Dad on our family farm,
raising grain, hay, and cattle. Farming and cattle have always been close to my heart and I am
now able, with my wife Linda, to have my own full time haying and cattle operation. Since
working for Empire, I have been able to focus on our own operation solely.
I have lived on Three Mile road my whole life, living my adult years in the house I built right out
of High School during the Maki years. It is the place I love and am so thankful to be able to live
and work there.
I have two children, Mickey and Cheyenne. My wife, Linda has four children, Zach, Jenna,
Tallie, and Sawyer. Our tenth grandchild is on its way.
From my experience, I would say that the shop classes played a very important part in my High
School years, providing a great opportunity for me and providing and maintaining my interest
and motivation in school. I believe having a shop like Timberline does provides a unique
opportunity for High School students to prepare to be an integral part of the skilled work force
and, if they desire, right out of High School. In the process, the academic skills can be
integrated into their hands-on working experience. All that is needed in this batch of
ingredients is that they apply themselves. What an opportunity we provide to our students,
and it is my desire to see this opportunity, which has been so good to me, continue for the
young people who are attending, and will attend on into the future.
